Botox Injections in Legs

Most people have heard of it as an answer to forehead wrinkles and crow's feet, but since its approval in 1989 for the treatment of certain eye disorders, Botox has made itself useful in many different therapeutic areas.

New research reported now confirms that Botox is also an effective treatment for post-stroke spasticity and even some cases of low-grade cerebral palsy.

Spasticity causes muscles in the arms or legs to tighten uncontrollably, and can often lead to severe pain, discomfort, and even disability.

The condition is not uncommon in people who have suffered brain injury associated with stroke, and for those who have spasticity in the hands, tasks as simple as getting dressed or making meals can become nearly impossible to manage.

Botox Injections

While Botox has not received FDA approval for the treatment of spasticity, doctors have used it to address post-stroke muscle problems for some time. Essentially, the drug works by entering nerve endings around the muscle where it is injected, and thus stopping the release of chemical messages that cause the muscle to contract.

Many studies at several different universities have confirmed that Botox does have some positive effect on these muscles, but that surgery is still the best way to achieve long lasting results.

The placebo-controlled study involved 126 patients with some measure of spasticity in the hands. Forty of the 64 participants who received the Botox reported improvement in the area where it was injected, and no adverse side effects were reported. In the group that received placebo, 17 of the 62 patients reported improvement.

The chances are the in the near future the Botox treatment will be approved by the FDA to treat stroke victims and cerebral palsy patients, so for the time being, the treatment is not covered by most HMO's.

If you would like more information about this topic please do a simple Internet search and try to find a doctor who has some experience with the treatment.

This is not really in the realm of plastic surgery and the chances are that most plastic surgeons will not have the training or capabilities to give you or your loved on the treatment that they need.
