Breast Implant Recovery

For individuals that are interested in obtaining breast implants through breast augmentation surgery, a common question that they have relates to the steps and time required for breast implant recovery. Like any other surgical method, breast augmentation surgery requires that a patient take an appropriate amount of time off from their regular schedules to allow their bodies to recuperate from the procedure. However, the steps and time needed for breast implant recovery is not excessive and post-surgery medical complications are rare.

Immediately after the breast augmentation surgery, the patient will find that they will need at least a week to recover from the procedure. Despite the fact that they will be able to continue with their regular routine, it is advised that a patient spend the first 48 following the surgery resting and allowing their body to immediately recuperate. The patient will find that their breasts will be very firm, high, and swollen. However, by devoting time to allowing their body to rest and heal, the patient will find that the amount of time required for breast implant recovery will be minimal.

There are some ways for a breast augmentation patient to speed up breast implant surgery recovery time immediately following the surgery. Some suggestions include applying ice packs on the chest on the day of the surgery. Additionally, it is highly recommended that breast augmentation patients sleep in an upright position for at least two weeks following the surgery and to avoid sleeping on their stomach. Another suggestion is targeted for patients that have obtained smooth implants and it is recommended that these patients massage their breasts daily as a way to keep their implants softer and in a proper position.

No Pressure

For all breast implant patients, the best way to avoid interfering with breast implant recovery is to ensure that no unnecessary pressure is placed on the chest area during the first week of recovery.

Within the first week of breast implant recovery, the patient should be dedicating time towards recuperating. However, during this same week, the patient may have to visit their plastic surgeon to remove some of the objects that the plastic surgeon had placed on the patient during the surgery. For example, gauze dressings that may have been applied during the surgery will be removed several days after the surgery. Within seven and ten days, the patient will return to their plastic surgeon's to have their stitches. Also, these post-surgery visits with their plastic surgeon enables the patient to receive advice and other tools that would aid their breast implant recovery process. For example, many plastic surgeons provide their patient with a surgical bra that is designed to strengthen the breast tissue and reinforce the placement of the breast implants.

Although patients will be able to return to work within a week and will be able to resume their regular social schedule within two weeks, they have to be patient when expecting to fully recover from their breast augmentation surgery. Typically, swelling in the patient's breasts will be present for the first three to five weeks following the surgery before it disappears. Scars that resulted from the surgical techniques used in breast augmentation surgery are permanent, however plastic surgeons generally attempt to minimize the affects of surgical scars by placing them in parts of the patient's body that can be covered with a piece of clothing. Despite the patient's ability to return to their regular routine shortly after the surgery, breast implants recovery continues for as long as a year as it often takes this long for the patient's breast implants to settle into a permanent position.
