Breast Lift Procedure

If you have recently experienced weight loss or pregnancy, you may have noticed that your breasts have sagged somewhat. This is a natural occurrence that is the result of older and inelastic skin. As you age, breasts will tend to sag even more. It can be an unsightly and disproportionate condition that makes finding the right clothes a chore. If you are interested in getting a breast lift to ease your troubles, you're probably wondering what the whole procedure is.

The first step begins with you. A careful introspection should reveal whether or not you truly need a surgery. If your appearance is something that you can live with, then a surgery could end up being more time and money than it's worth. However, if you are frequently concerned and reminded of the appearance of sagging breasts, then the only way to do something about it is a breast lift. It's a personal choice, and once you've made it, the next thing to do is find a surgeon.

There are many plastic surgeons around, but the right one for you should have a good background and history of successful patients. During your consultation, the plastic surgeon will be able to provide better insight into your needs and goals. Many women have misconceptions about what a breast lift can actually do. A board-certified plastic surgeon can help you clarify your expectations.

Most breast lift surgeries are done as an inpatient procedure in a hospital. This requires general anesthesia and the addition of an anesthetist to the operating staff. For lighter surgeries it is still possible to do a breast lift as an outpatient procedure in the surgeon's office. In an outpatient procedure only require local anesthesia is required and the patient does not need to stay in the facility overnight. Some highly skilled surgeons can do any kind of breast lift as an outpatient procedure. They're cheaper and faster than a lengthy hospital visit.

There are three general types of breast lift procedures. They all involve the cutting away of skin on the breast, followed by the repositioning of the nipple through sutures.

  • The first is the concentric breast lift. This requires circular incisions around the nipple. These are not very popular because the results can often be spotty.
  • The next kind is a vertical breast lift. This requires a vertical incision down from the nipple to the breast crease. These are popular among women with less sag and who don't want large scars.
  • The last kind of breast lift is the anchor breast lift. This is the most popular technique because it provides the maximum lift. The incision is shaped like a keyhole around the nipple, runs down to the crease and across to the sides. Unfortunately this technique also leaves the most obvious scarring.

Depending on your situation, one technique will be right for you. Talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon today to discuss your options.
