Nobody looks forward to undergoing any surgical procedure. Regardless of how desirable its outcome, surgery can be a scary process. This holds true to breast augmentation surgery, a cosmetic surgical treatment that enhances the size and shape of a patient's breast tissue. Additionally, it is important to know the dangers of breast implants in case any complications may arise. Although the majority of breast augmentation surgical cases end with safe and trouble free results, some dangers of breast implants include:

• Additional surgeries:
  By undergoing breast augmentation surgery, patients have increased the likelihood that they will have to undergo additional surgical treatments. Often surgery will be needed to replace or remove the breast implant.
• Breast Tissue Atrophy:
  Also known as chest wall deformity, this condition results from the pressure of the breast implant causing a patient's breast tissue to thin and shrink. This condition can occur while breast implants have been removed or are in place.
• Capsular Contracture:
  This condition refers to a situation where capsule, also known as scar tissue, which usually forms around the breast implant begin to tighten and the breast implants begins to feel squeezed. It is a condition that typically follows infection and should be treated as soon as it is detected. The symptoms of capsular contracture range from mild firmness and discomfort to severe pain and movement of the breast implant.
• Cosmetic results:
  While the majority of breast augmentation patients have positive experiences with the outcome of the surgery, many find that they are dissatisfied. Problems such as wrinkling, asymmetry, implant displacement, incorrect size, unanticipated shape, implant palpability, scar deformity, hypertrophic scarring, and sloshing can occur, which may lead to patients unhappy with the outcome of the surgery.
• Deflation:
  Also known as rupture, this is a condition that occurs when the breast implant has deflated due to either a leak within the implant or a rupture of the implant shell.
• Hermatoma/Seroma:
  Both of these conditions typically occur within 24 hours of breast augmentation surgery and relate to issues of the patient's blood. Hermatoma refers to the collection of blood inside a blood tissue and seroma is the collection of the watery portion of the blood. Following surgery, postoperative hermatoma and seroma can result in infection and the development of capsular contracture. In particular dire cases of large hermatomas and seromas, the patient may need to undergo surgical draining to properly heal.
• Infection:
  Infection can occur within any surgery and breast augmentation surgery is no different. The one complication in patients with breast implants is that doctors have more difficulty in treating infections in these people compared to patients with normal body tissues.
• Nipple and breast sensation changes:
  Due to the amount of surgical work used in breast augmentation, you should expect an increase or decrease in the feeling of the nipple and breasts. Nerve endings are often severed during this treatment and it may take months for your nipples and breasts to regain sensation. Changes in these areas can be permanent and range from intense sensitivity to no feeling.
• Pain:
  Following breast augmentation surgery, you should expect to rest for a week to allow your body to heal. Much like any other surgical procedure, it is not unheard of for patients to feel pain of varying intensity and duration following the treatment. However, if this pain continues to linger and grow to the point where it is severe, you should consult your plastic surgeon immediately. Severe pain can be an indication that complications have arisen due to improper breast implant size or breast implant placement.
