Laser Dermabrasion

Laser dermabrasion, like other forms of dermabrasion, is used to smooth out skin irregularities but unlike traditional dermabrasion methods, which typically employ a hand-held scraping or sanding tool, laser dermabrasion uses powerful beams of focused lights to treat imperfections.

Laser dermabrasion can be used to treat wrinkles, scarring, pockmarks, skin discoloration and it can even be used for tattoo removal.

Many people are attracted to this form of dermabrasion because in most cases it has proven more accurate than other techniques. This is because the depth at which the laser burns the outer layers of skin can be precisely controlled to yield a uniform result on all treated areas.

In addition to the high level of surgical accuracy, with laser dermabrasion the bleeding and healing time associated with other forms of dermabrasion is often reduced.

Laser dermabrasion has proven most effective on patients that have fair, healthy, non-oily skin. People with darker skin tones who undergo laser dermabrasion are always at a greater risk of developing changes in skin pigmentation. Each patient will have a different reaction to laser dermabrasion and therefore the time that it takes to heal will vary from person to person. Most laser dermabrasion patients have redness, scabbing and swelling after surgery that can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few of months.

The actual laser dermabrasion procedure involves the removal of the top layer of the skin in the area where imperfections are visible. There is no incision necessary, but the procedure is usually done under general anesthetic unless the procedure is extremely minor (in which case a local anesthetic would be used).

To determine whether or not you might benefit from laser dermabrasion consult a plastic surgeon in your area. He or she will be able to thoroughly evaluate the condition of your skin and let you know whether you are a good candidate for this sort of procedure.
