Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction Procedure
Are you interested in undergoing liposuction surgery but have questions regarding the liposuction procedure - length, anesthesia, in or outpatient? These are obviously important matters that need to be answered before you decide on whether liposuction is what you want. Unfortunately, liposuction surgery has progressed to the point where there are numerous techniques that contain their own pros and cons. Additionally, the surgical techniques used in liposuction will vary depending on the part of the body that is being targeted. As a result, questions that you may have regarding the liposuction procedure - length, anesthesia, in or out patient will be answered by your plastic surgeon during the consultation process. Your plastic surgeon will be able to cater the details of the liposuction procedure to your customary needs. However, to help you understand the different aspects of the liposuction procedure, we will discuss the different issues revolving around the treatment such as the length of time needed, the types of anesthesia used, and the setting of the operation.
Length of Time
The length of time that the liposuction surgery will be completed depends on a number of issues. These issues include the part of the body that is being targeted during the operation and the number of operations that need to be performed. For example, if you were to undergo a single liposuction surgery where fat deposits will be extracted from an area of the body with the capability to store large amounts of fat such as the thighs, then the surgery will be completed within an hour or two. However, if the liposuction surgery that you are undergoing is targeting a part of the body that contains sensitive veins and requires that the plastic surgeon perform their work more intricately such as the neck, then the length of time of the operation will increase. Additionally, for patients that are undergoing liposuction surgery for multiple parts of the body, the amount of time that the treatment will be completed is going to be much longer.
Anesthesia
Although there are a large number of different types of liposuction surgical techniques, all of these surgical techniques incorporate the use of anesthesia. Anesthesia is used to calm the patient during what is a stressful day. Nobody looks forward to undergoing surgery and the last thing that a plastic surgeon needs is a jittery patient. As a result, anesthesia is administered to the patient to ease them throughout the liposuction procedure.
However, the type of anesthesia that is used will depend on the type of liposuction surgery that is being performed. In less complex liposuction procedures, only local anesthetics will be given to the patient. The patient will remain awake throughout the entire procedure but will feel calm and experience minimal discomfort. The advantage of local anesthesia is that the patient is able to provide feedback to the plastic surgeon that is performing the treatment.
In complex liposuction procedures, the anesthesia that is used is general anesthesia. An additional person needs to be present during these complex treatment as it a professional anesthetist that administers general anesthesia to the patient. During the treatment, the patient will be asleep and will have no memory of the treatment. Considering its power, the patient will have to follow directions provided by the plastic surgeon and anesthetist regarding what they can and can't do before and after the surgery. Following the treatment, the patient will have to stay overnight to have their health monitored.
In or out patient
The setting of the liposuction surgery will depend on how complex the liposuction procedure that is being performed is. For less complex liposuction treatments, the surgery can be performed at an outpatient center. During this treatment, the plastic surgeon will administer local anesthesia to the patient and the patient will be able to go home following the treatment.
However, for more complex liposuction procedures, the treatment will need to be performed at an inpatient center. The use of general anesthesia during the surgery immediately means that the patient will have to stay overnight to have their health monitored.
Liposuction Procedure
Despite the fact that there are numerous liposuction procedures that differ in terms of the medical technology that it uses and the areas of the body that it targets, there are some general traits in all of these different liposuction procedures. At the beginning of the liposuction operation, the plastic surgeon will attach pads to the patient's body as a way to monitor the patient's health throughout the procedure. These pads measure the patient's heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels in their blood. Although the goal of the plastic surgeon is to perform the liposuction surgery to the best of their abilities, all plastic surgeons will stop the operation at any point where it seems the patient's health is being negatively affected.
In all liposuction treatments, the plastic surgeon administers an intravenous drip of saline as a base to keep the patient from being dehydrated as fat is being extracted from their bodies. Some kind of anesthesia and sedative is given to the patient so that they can relax throughout the surgery. The plastic surgeon then marks the parts of the body that is being operated on with a pen, which is used to guide them when they are making incisions on the patient's body. Once the plastic surgeon has made the necessary incisions, they will then insert a cannula (suction probe) into the incisions to loosen the fat cells that are to be removed during the surgery.
At this point, the different liposuction procedures will vary depending on the type of medical technology that it incorporates to break up the patient's fat cells. However, once the appropriate fat deposits have been extracted from the patient's body, the plastic surgeon will then clean up the incisions and sew them up. At this point, the procedure is completed and the patients begin the recovery process from this treatment.
