Otoplasty Ear Surgery

While the vast majority of plastic surgery is reserved for adults (although even that is changing) the one surgery that is preformed more often on young people than old people is otoplasty ear surgery.

Growing up with protruding and odd shaped ears can be an enormous burden for a young person. There is no denying that children can be extremely cruel, and a child with abnormal ears can become an easy target for bullying.

Otoplasty ear surgery has helped million of young people all over America solve this problem and has allowed them to live a life relatively free of ridicule and has thus given them the confidence to live their life to the fullest and concentrate on the things that really matter; like being young.

If you are concerned at all about sending your child to have an elective surgery you should know that most plastic surgeons have years of experience and they know the special situation of dealing with a patient that is younger, and may have more questions about the procedure than an adult.

Procedure details

Firstly, a general anesthetic is often used, so the child will not have traumatic experience during the surgery. While a local anesthetic can allow the surgery to be painless and comfortable, the thought of being operated on while still awake can be a terrifying idea for a young person.

The general anesthetic will ensure that all of the child's fears are put to rest and they will have no memory of the experience. It also means that they will spend a night in the hospital under observation, so there is little chance that anything will go wrong.

Otoplasty Cost

The cost of otoplasty ear surgery will also probably surprise you. Firstly, while it is a cosmetic procedure, some HMO's will cover partial costs, so you already have that working in your favor. But beyond that, the surgery is relatively inexpensive compared to other elected surgeries.

There is also a very short recovery time. If you choose to have the surgery the best time is during the summer so your child will not have to miss any school. Besides the mild discomfort your young one will feel, the only other negative effect will be the requirement of having to sleep in a chair for a couple weeks.

Sleeping in a bed could result in damage to the ear, as most people sleep on their sides and may unconsciously roll over and do damage to the affected area.
