Facial Implant Procedure

Face and Neck Surgery

Procedure

If you've been pondering a facial implant but aren't 100% sure about it, then you'll probably want to know more about the surgical details. Though techniques and costs vary from surgeon to surgeon, there are some basics that you should know before you go in for a consultation.

Deciding in favor of plastic surgery is entirely up to you. A surgeon can help answer your questions, but it remains your choice. You need to figure out for yourself whether your disproportionate features are really that much to worry about. If it's something you can live with, then the time and money required for a facial implant may not be worth it. If you worry about it incessantly, and are often self-conscious about your appearance, then a facial implant may indeed give you the peace of mind that you deserve.

If you do decide to move forward, the first step is to find a board-certified plastic surgeon. An accredited surgeon can help minimize basic risks associated with any medical procedure like infections and botched surgeries. You should discuss your expectations thoroughly in case they are not realistic. It could help to have an idea of what you want to look like. Usually a photo of someone else with the features you want is helpful.

Consultation

It is important that you should discuss your expectations thoroughly with your plastic surgeon in case they are not realistic. It could help to have an idea of what you want to look like.

Your surgeon will walk you through the procedure and should detail the exact costs of the entire operation. Keep in mind that your surgeon needs to know about your dental and gum conditions if he or she proposes to use incisions within the mouth. If you're a smoker, there may be additional complications so your surgeon needs to know that.

The surgery takes place in a local surgeon's office as an outpatient procedure. That means that only local anesthesia is required, and that you can be driven home immediately after the surgery. The time to complete one implant is about an hour or less.

The healing process

For cheek and lower jaw implants it will take more time because two implants (for each side) are usually required. Incisions are usually made in the mouth, and are used to hollow out a small pocket in the flesh for the implant. The implant is an inert material that is soft and discreet. It's always custom shaped depending on your needs.

After the surgery is complete, sutures will be used to seal the incisions. These typically dissolve in your mouth over time and do not require post-operative care unless they fail to dissolve. The only complications that can result are an infection in the mouth. These can be avoided with oral antibiotics and good dental hygiene.
