Saline Breast Implants

When people hear terms like saline breast implants or silicone breast implants or silicone breast implants, they often find themselves confused. Aren't breast implants something to increase the size of a person's breasts and how can there be different kinds of breast implants? To answer these questions, a breast implant is an implant that is used in the cosmetic surgery procedure breast augmentation to enhance the size and shape of a person's breast tissue. An implant varies based on what it is made out of.

There is a basic blueprint to what makes up a breast implant. A breast implant contains a silicone shell that is made up of some sort of filler material that gives the implant its size and shape. Up to 1992, the most popular filler material used in breast implants were silicone: a naturally, occurring element found in sand, quartz, and rock that is the second most common element found in the earth's crust. However, after concerns about the effects of silicone on the human body if it were to circulate compelled the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to impose a ban on the availability of silicone breast implants in 1992, saline breast implants became the most popular type of implant available.

Saline Implants

Saline breast implants contain saline as its filler material. Unlike silicone, which many suspect led to higher occurrences of connective tissue disease, immunological disorders, neurological disorders, cancer, and capsular contracture if the implant were to rupture and the silicone material were to circulate with the person's bloodstream, saline is considered to be completely safe. This is because saline is a salt-water solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up the majority of the human body.

Ruptures in breast implants are a possibility that anybody obtaining breast implants faces. Although breast implants are made to be strong and stable, there are instances where they can break and the filler material contained within the implant may leak and circulate through the body. If a rupture would occur, a saline breast would deflate and the saline held within the implant would harmlessly absorb within the body.

This safety feature is a major reason why saline breast implants are the most widely used type of implant. Despite not being able to replicate the same natural look and feel of a silicone breast implant, saline breast implants are actually extremely versatile. Accessible to the public without carrying a medical requirement, saline breast implants vary in terms of: shell surface, volume, shell thickness, profile shape, and expandable implants. This diversity ensures that any patient can match their expectations when undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

So whether you are looking to fix a disproportion between breasts or gain proportion within your body, breast augmentation surgery is available. Consult a plastic surgeon if you are interested in learning more about this treatment.
