Side Effects and Risks

Facial implants are among the safest cosmetic procedures available on the market today. They are minimally invasive, and only require small incisions inside the mouth that will never be seen by others.

The only real risks are associated with infection. That's because the mouth is a bacteria-rich environment that is prone to infection when it has open wounds. Luckily, the risk of infection can be reduced with antibiotic use and proper oral hygiene. Patients are also advised to simplify their diet while their mouths heal in order to prevent damage to the sutures. Most patients emerge safely after the week or two that the sutures take to dissolve.

There are rare cases where the flesh surrounding the implant gets infected. This is difficult to treat and usually requires the removal of the implant in a second surgical procedure. It can be replaced at a later time once the infection heals.

Even more rare and unpredictable is a shift in the placement of the implant. If the implant happens to wander out of place, a corrective surgery may have to take place to correct the situation.

Facial Implant risks

Even though the materials used for modern implants are biologically compatible and inert, there are still some risks associated with certain materials.

Of course, depending on where the implant was placed, there are varying sets of side effects that can occur. For instance, if a cheek implant is placed through the lower eyelid, than the risks shift from the mouth to the eyes.

Most research hasn't been going on long enough to determine if there are any long-term risks associated with every kind of material that is available.

A board-certified surgeon can help reduce the chance of most side effects and risks. However, as with all surgeries there is an element of chance and unpredictability
that must be accounted for. Be sure to discuss and understand in detail the things that can complicate your facial implant so that you won't be surprised if they do crop up.
