The silicone gel implants that are used for silicone breast enhancement were first introduced in the 1960s, but since the 1980s silicone breast enhancement has garnered quite a bit of criticism.

Saline implants are considered by many to be quite a bit safer than their silicone cousins. This is because saline implants are filled with salt-water rather than the compound silicone, which is also used to make binders, caulking, and sealants and latex paints.
